Elephant in the Room

Nine ornately dressed and bejeweled female dancers form the body of the elephant in this painting, serving as mount to a green-skinned archer wearing a golden crown, perhaps recalling the Hindu deity Krishna. Composite animals made of humans, demons, and real and mythical creatures appeared commonly in Persian, Mughal, and Deccani drawings and paintings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This later example, made in the classical Southern Indian, gold-coated painting style of Thanjavur (formerly Tanjore), offers a whimsical take on earlier conventions.
