Tradition and Innovation installation

In the latter part of his career, Signac devoted himself above all to watercolor; he was drawn by the vibrant colors and simple feeling of spontaneity. He asserted, “the speed of execution, the diminutiveness of the format prevent it from being encumbered with details that would petrify the sensation.”
This is one of a series of watercolors Signac painted between 1923 and 1929 at Lezardrieux, a village in northern Brittany, where he spent several months each year. Signac takes full advantage of the capabilities of the medium; the transparent washes amplify the feeling of light airiness and the dabs energize the landscape with implied movement.
