Summer 2009 The expansion of Edo into a metropolis resulted from the early 17th-century Japanese requirement that feudal lords, or daimyo, maintain a permanent domicile there and reside in the capital every other year. The merchant class of Edo expanded to provide for the increased material needs of the city. This scene depicts an alley and drainage canal between two daimyo residences, with the red gate in the distance marking the entrance to a shrine. The bamboo grove and black fence in the foreground were known to mark the perimeter of the residence of the daimyo of the Kato clan, whose ancestor was famous for having single-handedly killed a tiger in a bamboo thicket in Korea.
