Pène du Bois, active in New York during the opening decades of the twentieth century, fell under the influence of the artist Robert Henri (1865–1929). Pène du Bois responded affirmatively to Henri’s charge to seek creative stimulation from life and found inspiration in cafés, restaurants, concerts, and clubs. Pène du Bois’ work is often characterized by rounded figural forms. In certain compositions, like Chanticleer, distinctive features such as faces are less defined. While one rotund male is positioned in the corner, another male character struts across the room and cuts quite a figure. With a mustache and top hat, the elegant man appears to be in motion. His arms are held out from his body as he hits a full stride, and the tail of his coat hangs in the air. The bright red of the wall in the background adds a dramatic and startling feel to the composition.
