Sofonisba Anguissola (Italian, also active in Spain, ca. 1532-1625)
Portrait of a Spanish Prince as Hunter (Philip II?)
1573
Oil on canvas
Gift of Anne R. and Amy Putnam, 1936.58

Sofonisba Anguissola, arguably the most famous and sought-after female artist of her day, left Milan for Madrid in 1559 at the invitation of Philip II of Spain, who employed her as lady-in-waiting and painting tutor to his young queen, Isabel of Valois.
The identity of this young sitter has long been a matter of debate, despite the inscription in Italian identifying the infante (prince) as Philip the future king, son of emperor Charles V. Philip II was already in middle age by the date of the painting. However, retrospective depictions of adults as children were not uncommon at the time, especially if the work was meant for a portrait gallery that included other royal children. The painting was intended for the duke of Savoy in Turin, who had recently moved his court to the famed hunting lodge at Stupinigi. The infante’s emerald green hunting attire would have been perfect in this setting. --MAB 2015
