THE FRAME IN AMERICA: 1860–1960
(DECEMBER 8, 2001–FEBRUARY 3, 2002)

American Impressionist Arts and
Crafts-Style Frame
1910
Designed and fabricated by Carrig-Rohane Shop, Inc., Boston

Cottonwood, red bole, and 22k gold leaf

This scoop-profiled, hammer-carved, stippled-gesso frame was made by the renowned Boston School frame makers, and is signed on the verso, “Carrig-Rohane Shop, Inc. RC and NM Vose, Boston, 1910.” Also on the back is a label from the Macbeth Gallery, a New York gallery, which at the time represented Carlsen’s work.

The shimmering quality of the gold is a result of a sophisticated surface texture first made by carving soft ripples in the wood followed by “pouncing” or “stippling” the hot gesso with a hogshair brush. When the gold covers the surface, and is toned to harmonize with the painting, it exaggerates every texture with its own reflective intensity. When successfully accomplished, the technique imitates the texture and tone of the painting without visually overpowering it.
