Saint Catherine of Alexandria, kneeling on the left, and Saint Margaret of Antioch, seated at right reading a breviary (prayer book), are depicted in the guise of princesses. Indeed, as Catherine accepts a gold ring to symbolize her betrothal to Jesus, she becomes part of the heavenly court. As would befit such a ceremony, the holy family and saints are accompanied by musical angels, one with a harp and the other playing a small lute.

The Master of Frankfurt, whose real name was probably Hendrik van Wueluwe, was among the most important painters in Renaissance Antwerp. He and his extensive workshop produced many altarpieces for churches ranging from Germany to Spain, and well as the Netherlands. This panel was made for the parish church in Huesca, Spain.

The “Master of Frankfurt” is the name assigned by scholars to an artist responsible for a group of paintings stylistically similar to two altarpieces made for the German city of Frankfurt am Main. The artist is perhaps to be identified as Hendrik van Wueluwe, who was active in Antwerp from 1483 until his death there in 1533. Like many of the Netherlandish painting workshops, the Master of Frankfurt’s studio repeatedly drew on a common group of compositions, figures, and motifs. This was a particularly efficient means of production for paintings intended to be exported, as the repetitions would not be recognized when the pictures were scattered among distant cities. The San Diego painting, which comes from a church in Spain, is just such a work, and was one of many Netherlandish altarpieces sent to the Iberian peninsula in the 15th century.
