Young Man in a Gorget and a Plumed Hat

Gift of Anne R. and Amy Putnam, 1939.19

Beginning in 1628 as a teenager, Isaac Jouderville apprenticed with Rembrandt as one his first two pupils (the other was Gerrit Dou). Jouderville paid Rembrandt the impressive sum of one hundred guilders a year for the training. In early works such as this one, Jouderville shows his competent assimilation of his famous teacher’s style. It was not uncommon for Rembrandt to sign his students’ work, including this one, which is inscribed with his customary cursive monogram of this period: RHL 1631. --MAB 2015
