Like so many ceramics produced in Iran during the Safavid period, the style and decoration of this dish attempts to emulate highly regarded Chinese porcelain. The hatched pattern around the rim, the undulating floral vine, and the central image of a mythical beast are all of Chinese inspiration, looking back to fifteenth-century prototypes.
