Umeomaru was one of three triplets and a loyal samurai follower of Sugawara Michizane, a minister at the Heian court in Kyoto during the ninth century, who was falsely accused and exiled for treason to distant Kyushu. The name Umeomaru is associated with the plum blossom (ume), which appears in the background of the print.
