The oldest bowls here, from the ninth and tenth century, are made of earthenware clay and are decorated with tinted slip made of diluted clay. By the eleventh century, a new kind of clay had been developed, incorporating quartz and glass frit, which allowed potters to make vessels with thinner walls that could also be shaped with fine molds. New alkaline glazes offered a range of brighter colors, and turquoise became especially popular.
