Alessandro Magnasco is considered one of the most eccentric and intelligent original artists working in Milan during the Baroque era. While his name is lesser known today, he was eagerly collected during the first few decades of the eighteenth century. Although he began his career as a portrait artist, he is renowned for his epic genre paintings and landscape canvases that incorporate abstraction and fantasy. The subjects of many of Magnasco’s canvases were those on the fringe of society rather than the elite, as is the case in this painting, where poor fishermen are the only figures in the composition. A similar canvas located in Vienna with the same subject matter may be the matching pair to this painting, since Magnasco frequently made his paintings in sets. --MAB 2015
