Bodhisattvas are beings who have achieved such advanced spiritual attainments that they are close to reaching total enlightenment, or Buddhahood. In art, bodhisattvas wear princely garments and jewels, which refer to the Buddha’s early life as a prince. This sculpture would have been housed in a small shrine or subsidiary niche within a Buddhist temple precinct. On the pedestal, worshippers honor the Buddha who is shown seated in meditation.
