After many years of meditation, Siddhartha achieves enlightened status, after which he spends his time traveling and preaching. In this decorative relief the Buddha appears seated, with his hand raised to the worshippers surrounding him. It is a scene familiar from Buddhist art all over South Asia, but the Corinthian columns and the toga-like robes the figures wear reveal the Gandharan artists’ awareness of Classical sculpture.
