By the time that Bol took up this subject in 1644, Rembrandt had already made four etchings of Saint Jerome, and Bol surely also knew of Jan Lievens's similarly large print of 1631.

The San Diego Museum of Art owns two impressions of this print, both of the second state. The stronger and richer impression has been trimmed to follow the curving top of the image, a not infrequent practice in the history of print collecting. Both examples are exhibited here to demonstrate the unique natrue of prints, in which even two impressions of a single state can vary in appearance.
