In addition to large prints such as the Sacrifice of Abraham and Gideon's Sacrifice, Bol also produced a number of the character sketches called tronies in his first years as an independent master. Although these figure studies are thought usually to have been taken from live models, they are not intended as protraits, but rather, as studies of expression, physiognomy, or character "types" such as scholars, soldiers, or alluring young women. The figures are often seen in fanciful costumes that emphasized their exotic quality but also gave opporunity for the artists to demonstrate their ability to depict different textures and patterns.
