Prince Oto no Miya (1308 to 1335) was beheaded while imprisoned in a cave in order to prevent his capture by a band of rebels. His wife Minami no Miya tries to prevent the execution. In the inset panel above, the prince’s head is on display. Chikanobu drew heavily upon Japanese historical episodes in an effort to counterbalance the modern western styles and subjects that were flooding into Japan. Knowledge among the merchant-class populace of episodes from their historical past was essential for maintaining a Japanese national identity during this tumultuous period of change.
