Bellows is most associated with the Ashcan School, a group of artists affiliated with painter Robert Henri (1865–1929) who practiced their own distinctive version of urban realism. In its presentation of a tranquil, rural environment, however, Three Pigs and a Mountain is a departure from Bellows’s well-known exterior and interior scenes of New York. Its composition looks compressed, creating a dynamic perspective. The trees that frame the scene and the shrubbery in the middle appear to be in motion. While the pastoral quality of the animals and the shed gives the painting a traditional feel, the depiction of the trees conveys a modern impression. While other American artists were experimenting with abstract compositions at this time, Bellows clung to representational art, but this work demonstrates the forward-thinking practices of the artist and his Ashcan School counterparts.
