Albert Bierstadt created sweeping landscapes, and his canvases often feature the American West. He frequently presented the natural terrain as relatively untrammeled space. Bierstadt maintained a studio in New York, where he worked on his final product. Though he is best known for his paintings of the American landscape, View of the Wetterhorn from the Valley of Grundelwald is representative of one of the many trips he took to Europe. The Wetterhorn is a mountain (12,113 feet tall) located in the valley of Grindelwald in Switzerland. The ascent of the Wetterhorn in the mid-nineteenth century sparked interest in the Swiss Alps among the general public and inspired numerous leading European artists of the previous generation, foremost among them the British master of atmospheric landscape painting Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851).
