Past In Reverse: Contemporary Art from East Asia [Historical section]
The small album is a collection of butterflies and flowers of different varieties. Works such as these are closely associated with the contemporary productions of Hee-Jeong Jang, who simultaneously perpetuates and celebrates the sewing and imagery of traditional women artists. The paintings in this album are painted on both sides of translucent pith paper, which lends a slightly three-dimensional effect. Pith paper, very popular in China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is made from a thin shaving of the pith of a tree, just beneath the bark. These paintings are in remarkably good condition, given the extreme fragility and irreparability of pith paper.
