Rufino Tamayo is one of Mexico's great Modernist painters, as well as a prolific printmaker. In these graphite and ink drawings, Tamayo creates complementary and contrasting visual fields through his juxtaposition of line and color. The graphite lines are separated from and joined with the watercolor washes of red and green. Surfaces vibrate between foreground and background, between Modernist abstract stains and the penciled outlines of bowl and figure. Tamayo's fascination with Mexico's indigenous past was fueled by his appointment as chief of the Department of Ethnographic Drawing at the National Archaeological Museum in 1921. Tamayo's view of the pre-Hispanic past, however, is oriented toward a private cosmology.
