Legend proudly claims that the Buddha himself brought his teachings to Sri Lanka, and Theravada Buddhism is still practiced on the island today. This very rare sculpture, from the Anuradhapura period, represents a bodhisattva, an enlightened being who can help others on their path to enlightenment. It shows him in the typical form of a royal figure with a jeweled crown, although there are some unusual examples of bodhisattvas from Sri Lanka that are depicted as ascetics.
