The largest figure in this panel is the Buddha, who grasps the hand of his half-brother Nanda, whom he hopes will become a monk. Nanda is reluctant to leave his wife, so the Buddha takes him to see heaven and the beautiful celestial nymphs awaiting him there should he achieve enlightenment. The brothers are greeted by Indra, king of the gods, while Vajrapani, the Buddha’s bearded attendant, hovers in the background.
