Earthenware, with slip-painted decoration, 9th–10th century
Bold, graphic bowls with black-and-white designs were excavated by the dozen at the site of Nishapur, a major trade city in northeastern Iran, and they seem to have been a specialty of potters there. This bowl is decorated with a band of writing, with the word baraka (“blessing”) rendered in a stylized script, encircling a bird with wings curving up on either side of its head.
