Barnett Newman (1905–1970) was an American painter, print- maker, and sculptor. He had a considerable influence on devel- opments in art during the second half of the twentieth century, particularly Color Field painting and Minimalism. Commonly associated with Abstract Expressionism because of his close links with William Baziotes, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still, he is known for his large paintings in bold colors, divided by thin vertical lines, which the artist called “zips.”
