The poet Ry?tei Senka I (1806–1868) partnered with the artist Utagawa Kunisada to illustrate his serial novel about the romantic adventures of Princess Uzuki and the hero Shidoroku. Such popular novels were issued in double volumes with full-color covers. Inside, the text and ample illustrations were printed in black-and-white.
