Brehme began to study photography in 1898. His trip to Africa in 1900 further stimulated his interest in photography and foreign places and people. By 1910, he had established himself in Mexico City and quickly created a body of work that was published in books on geography, anthropology, photography, and in popular magazines. The widespread appeal of Brehme's photographs made them suited for printing on postcards. These postcards by Brehme were popular both in Mexico and abroad.
