Britain's most important woman scultpure Barbara Hepworth's art is abstract, stripped of nonessentials and literary content. They are forms that verge on images of organic life. The introduction of negative spaces, holes, by her and Henry Moore in the early 1930's destroyed the concept of surface limitations to reveal hidden forces at work inside. The hole became an integral part of the total concept. The perfection and refinements of surface treatment by the artist have been favorably cited by critics.
