Rodin grew up in a working-class Paris neighborhood, and studied with prominent sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye, whose work is displayed elsewhere in the Museum. Rodin’s professional rise was impeded by his failure to gain acceptance to the École des Beaux-Arts, though it allowed him to avoid rigid Academic strictures. During a trip to Italy in 1876, he studied ancient Roman and Renaissance sculpture, especially that of Michelangelo, whose forms and writhing musculature can be seen echoed in this figure of Eve. --MAB 2020
