Life and Legacy 2019:
These three pictures were published in a Life photo-essay entitled A Soldier’s Farewell. In it, brief captions recount the “great and unconvincing show of being casual” and that “the look of goodbye hides nothing…what the people feel…shows clearly on their faces.”

The center image depicts the same couple featured on the cover of the April 19, 1943, issue of Life in the adjacent display case.  The young woman depicted with “clear-eyed courage” in the first photograph has here become emotional as she sends off her new husband—they had married just four days prior.
