War and Revolution, 1870–1940

Jawlensky’s career had taken him from Russia in 1905, just as revolution was starting, to France, Germany, Switzerland, and back to Germany following World War I. He never returned to Russia.
In 1933, the Nazis forbade the display of his work. However, Jawlensky did continue to paint, creating a very personal and profound series of abstract faces that numbered more than 1,000. All are small; the materials demonstrate the necessity to economize during the war. Meditation is characteristic of the series. The face is abstracted to its minimal components: strokes of black to suggest nose, brows, and lips. The dark and quiet intensity of these paintings, Jawlensky’s last, is evocative of both his personal pain and the ravaging of the world outside of his studio.
