Paper Traces
This lithograph depicts a theater of oppression-dwarfed, anonymous workers carry their heavy loads and negotiate the severe and menacing geometry of the desert. When José Clemente Orozco was residing in New York, much of his work dealt with the dehumanization of life in a mechanistic and urban environment. This piece conveys nostalgia for the dominance of nature over the man-made, even as it exaggerates the maguey cacti, or century plants, into organic towers rivaling any skyscraper in Manhattan.
