Portrait of a beekeeper with
his hives
Francis Frith & Co.
Northern India, Rajasthan, ca. 1870
Albumen print
This photograph, like the painting next to it, presents
the image of an Indian person as a representative of a
certain occupation as a way for outsiders to understand
Indian culture. With the introduction of photography
into India in the mid-1800s, many people started to buy
photographs of Indian life from studios such as Francis
Frith & Co., instead of commissioning artists to make
paintings.
