Portable Shinto shrines were kept in Japanese house-holds for offering prayer to the spirit gods, kami. Prominently displayed on this shrine is the motif of
three leaflike forms surrounded by a circle. This emblem was a family crest depicting hollyhocks and identifies the shrine as having belonged to the Tokugawa family who ruled Japan for 250 years.
