Dvaravati architecture in Thailand was often made of brick, and its decoration fashioned from stucco and terracotta. These terracotta fragments (from two different sculptures) would most likely to have been found in a decorative niche on the exterior of a Thai temple. The figure represents the Buddha in a typical meditative posture, with legs crossed and hands in the gesture of meditation (dhyana mudra). The very delicately rendered robe reveals the top of the undercloth that wraps around Buddha’s waist.
