A pioneer of 20th century art, Lipchitz, who was closely associated with Picasso, became one of the world masters of Cubism. By 1919 his works lost any curvilinear, descriptive naturalism; volume in "Bather" has been reduced to a minimum and what remains is a strikingly vertical, well proportioned architectonic figure. some of his later works use anthropomorphic shapes and convey liturgical themes.
