Reginald Poland, the first director of the Fine Arts Gallery (now The San Diego Museum of Art), forged a strong friendship with Maurice Braun. Poland responded with great enthusiasm to Braun’s paintings that celebrated the vibrant colors of fall. Rock Ledge in Autumn and other autumn paintings were the result of the artist’s October 1929 trip to Boston. While Braun is a noted painter of the California landscape, his landscapes also presented the natural beauty of the Eastern Coast of the United States, an area universally noted for its spectacular colors during the fall season, as evident in this painting.
