In his first major photographic series, twenty-five-year old Bruce Davidson immersed himself in a gang of teenagers called the Jokers, exploring and exposing the culture of wayward city youth. The Jokers' disadvantaged backgrounds and their rebellion against a society that had failed to provide for them formed a strong camaraderie. At Coney Island as the gang lounges, smokes, and show off for each other, the duality of the innocence of childhood and the dangers of their delinquent lifestyle are poignantly juxtaposed.
