Jane Avril got her start dancing at the Moulin Rouge in 1890, alongside la Goulue. In contrast to the feisty and full-figured Goulue, Avril was tall and willowy. Off stage she moved in a melancholy trance—a sadness that lifted, however, when she danced. This print was commissioned by Avril to mark her debut at the Jardin de Paris in 1893, two years after Lautrec’s first poster for the Moulin Rouge. She would go on to perform in London (with the Troupe of Madame Eglantine) and the in the United States, but it is the artist’s iconic image of La Goulue that clearly served as the model for this design. Both dancers are captured mid-kick. As in his earlier design for the Moulin Rouge, the foreground is again filled with a shadowy figure. The puppet-like profile of Valentin has been replaced, however, by a hairy-handed musician gripping his contrabass—the instrument’s neck forming a decorative frame.
