Among Lautrec’s famous “furias” or crushes (passing, but passionate, obsessions) was his infatuation with the actress Marcelle Lender. As with La Goulue (the dancer Louise Weber) and the singer Jane Avril at the Moulin Rouge, when Lautrec was enamored of a given sitter he was single-minded in his devotion. His friend, the writer Romain Coolus, tells how Lautrec dragged him repeatedly to see Miss Lender in her most acclaimed role, as Queen Galswintha in Hervé’s operetta Chilpéric at the Théatre des Variétes. There the artist sketched in his seat, preparing the studies for this profile portrait of Marcelle Lender sporting the poppy head-dress in which she danced the Bolero and the Fandango. First published in the German periodical Pan, this eight-color lithograph, a masterpiece of the printer’s art, was later reproduced in the journal’s French edition
