This three-color poster represents Lautrec’s second attempt at promoting the French cyclist Jimmy Michaël, and his Simpson brand bicycle chain. Michaël’s manager, Louis (Spoke) Bouglé, the French representative of Simpson bicyles, had rejected Lautrec’s first design (The Cyclist Michaël) on the grounds that the trademark chain and sprocket were inaccurately rendered. Lautrec nevertheless sent his first design to press, possibly in the hope of finding a market among Michaël’s fans. The finished poster, more action-filled and dynamic, is indeed an improvement upon the original design. A brass-band plays while the crouching cyclist prepares to overtake his competitors.
