This rare poster, Lautrec’s last, was designed for the Théâtre Antoine, where Jean Richepin’s drama in four acts, La Gitane (The Gypsy) premiered in January 1900. Set in the South of Spain, the story’s heroine is the cold-hearted gypsy Rita, who drives men (first her husband, then various suitors) to death and despair. Rita, played by the actress and singer Marthe Mellot, is portrayed here as a pitiless femme fatale. In an earlier sketch of the dancing Rita, Lautrec had experimented with a more exuberant arrangement, simplified in his final design to the slender silhouette of Marthe, looking over her shoulder at the caped suitor scampering fatefully up a rocky slope.
