Ringgold developed a distinctive art form by combining text and image to present personal and historical narratives that explore the African American experience.. Sometimes the stories told on her quilts are fictional, others are autobiographical, and occasionally they are a mixture of both. The central right square of Seven Passages to a Flight recalls Tar Beach (1988), the quilt that became the basis for Ringgold’s first children’s book. In Tar Beach, a young girl, Cassie Louise Lightfoot, escapes the summer heat in her apartment at an evening picnic on the roof of their building. The central lower square of the quilt references Ringgold’s The French Collection (1991–97), which presents the story of Willa Marie Simone, who leaves Harlem in the 1920s to seek artistic fulfillment in Paris.
