Between 1256 and 1353 the Mongols from Central Asia and China ruled Iran during a period known as the Il-Khanid, meaning ìsubjects of the Khan.î The first ruler of the Il-Khanid dynasty was Hulagu, the grandson of Genghis Khan, who established his capital in the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran.
It was during the Il-Khanid period that the first known illustrated Persian manuscripts were produced. The Jami al-Tavarikh, from which this important dated page comes, is one of the first illustrated manuscripts produced in Iran. It is a historical text written by an Il-Khanid prime minister. He organized an atelier of artists and scribes to produce illustrated manuscripts of this text. The Mongols' close links with China and Central Asia - areas controlled by other branches of the family of Genghis Khan - resulted in the use of many Sinicizing elements in art, which are especially evident in facial features and figural types. These stylistic elements adapted from Chinese and Central Asian art would deeply affect the subsequent development of Persian painting.
