This page is from a history of the Sassanian kings of the last pre-Islamic dynasty of Iran. Here, a famous general named Bahram Chubineh sits on a regal seat as he contemplates rebellion against his king, the Shah. He is looking towards his wise sister, Gordiyeh, who makes an impassioned appeal to him not to rebel against the Shah and to behave according to his status, foreseeing the ruin that would befall their family. Her pleadings are to no avail, and soon after Bahram Chubineh begins his short reign as usurper of the Iranian throne.
The first figural illustrations in manuscripts appeared during the Il-Khanid period (1256–1353) when the Mongol Khans ruled Iran. The Mongols introduced the facial and figural type seen here, with three-quarter profile and heavy robes that obscure the bodies, and it persisted in Persian painting for centuries.

This page from the Shahnameh comes from the last section of the book, which deals with the Sasanian dynasty that ruled Iran between 224 and 651 CE. Here, a famous general named Bahram Chubineh sits on a regal seat as he contemplates rebellion against his king, the Shah. He is looking towards his wise sister, Gordiyeh, who makes an impassioned appeal to him not to rebel against the Shah and to behave according to his status, foreseeing the ruin that would befall their family. Her pleadings are to no avail, and soon after Bahram Chubineh begins his short reign as usurper of the Iranian throne.
