Bequest of Mrs. Cora Timken Burnett
10 5/16 in. x 8 5/16 in. (26.19 cm x 21.11 cm)
One of the pioneering artists of Ukiyo-e, Harunobu perfected the art of the full-color print, which was called nishiki-e or “brocade print.” Here, with his typically subdued color palette and lyrical composition he has depicted a quiet drama in an interior scene. A young woman loosely clad in an autumnal kimono intently reads a letter, while an older woman lies sleeping in the background. A sliding screen used to partition the bedroom is painted with elements of a rocky landscape and is signed with the name of the artist.
