The distinctive characteristic of a jia is that it has legs, and the fact that this one has four rather than three legs makes it fairly rare. It was used for making offerings of wine in rituals that honor one's ancestors.

The ornamental vocabulary comprises a variety of stylized animals. The handle on the lid is in the form of two crested birds standing back-to-back. A bovine mask adorns the top of the handle, and under the handle on the bowl is a rabbit head that references the family name of the vessel's owners.
