Paris: A Century as Europe's Art Capital

During the first decade of the 20th century, Dufy’s work was identified first with the Impressionists, then with the Fauves, and subsequently with the Cubists. With each, however, rather than slavishly following specific precepts, Dufy relied upon his own artistic and philosophical sensibilities, especially those concerning light and color. This canvas presents his version of Cubism—called Para-Cubism (meaning related to, but separate from, mainstream Cubism)—which explores the fractured world introduced by Picasso while retaining the intense palette of the Fauves.
