Ceramics
Originally, all of the items here were used in homes
on a daily basis, but examples of Persian pottery and
metalwork are collected in museums as examples of
fine art because of the refined techniques and skillful
craftsmanship that went into making them. The objects
on view are also evidence of a vigorous international
trade in wares that moved between Iran, China, and
Egypt.
The oldest bowls here, from the ninth or tenth century,
are made of earthenware clay and are decorated
with tinted slip (made of diluted clay). By the eleventh
century, a new kind of clay known as stonepaste had
been developed, incorporating quartz and glass frit
which allowed potters to make vessels with thinner
walls that could also be shaped with fine molds. New
alkaline glazes offered a range of brighter colors, and
turquoise became especially popular.
