This series is drawn from a larger group of twelve in which Guillermo Meza pairs images with excerpts from The Book of Chilam Balam of Chumayel. Maya priests composed these accounts of native cosmology, myth, and history, and by citing them, Meza presents a sociocultural portrait that challenges typical imagery. The works entirely reconfigure the serene idealized passivity of the indigenismo tradition (which addresses the contemporary social and cultural concerns of indigenous peoples). Meza's characteristic use of Surrealist and Expressionist touches further expand on standard scenes. These lithographs demonstrate the smoky, atmospheric quality of the medium, dramatically heightened by contrasting elements in orange-red pigment.
